The Canon Rebel XS is a DSLR, but the Canon PowerShot SX20 is an advanced point-and-shoot. For more flexibility and Control, go with the Canon Rebel XS. You will be able to change lenses and external flashes with DSLR to buy. Plus, DSLRs have larger sensors than P & S cameras, so they have a better picture quality. If you are not "ready" for something with a bunch of controls and settings, go for the Canon PowerShot SX20. With P & S cameras are you just always stuck with the same lens, if you decide to upgrade, too. Some advanced P & S cameras come with hot shoes for external flash, though.
