Mobile Computing: Make Notebook Batteries

More than ten tips on how to get more from a battery.

Feature: Boosting Your Notebook Battery

Nothing is worse than piles of work on an airline flight ready – and your laptop battery begins to die. Okay, maybe a dead car battery; that leaves you in a steep ravine, how fast you swallow the flood is a little worse stranded. But not much.

With some improvements here and there, you keep your notebook battery to run longer. Read for details …

Configure your notebook Power Settings

Your notebook display and hard drive are its two biggest battery eater. But you can use a Windows XP Control Panel utility called Power Options . Control (Earlier versions of Windows offer similar power-saving options in Control Panel, too.)

Go to the Start menu, click Control Panel, and then open Power Options. On the Power Schemes tab, choose Portable / Laptop from the top drop-down menu. In the "Settings" area You can tell your notebook vary, depending on the energy function. For example, you can turn off the hard drive never when the computer is plugged into an AC adapter and stops turning after 3 minutes, when, on battery power. However, I recommend that you not allow to sleep too early to kick, because notebooks take one minutes or so coming from that state.

After fiddling with the settings, you can save the Portable / Laptop scheme or as a new rule: click Under the Save button, display "Portable / Laptop" or type a new name, and click OK.

With Stand By and Hibernate Fittingly,

Windows XP offers two power-saving sleep mode for your computer: Stand By, the way is as doze, and hibernate, which is deep, rapid-eye movement sleep-style (With the snoring of the man next to you on the bus available).

In Stand By mode, your display and hard drive and shut down all open applications and files stored in RAM. This allows your laptop to wake up fast, but a low power is needed to maintain this somnambulist state. Bottom line: Use Stand By for a short time if you do not need the computer – you are stretching your legs on a long flight, for example.

With Hibernate, everything is down and the contents RAM driven stored on your hard drive. Hibernate mode uses less power than standby, but takes a bit longer to continue. Bottom line: Hibernate is the ticket if you do not want your computer for awhile – you are changing to the airport to say – but you work faster to resume than you might after a complete System shutdown.

When you start off your computer in Windows XP, your options are Stand-by off, and start anew. Hibernate, place the cursor on the standby, then hold down the Shift key and click.

Stick to the Essentials

You Scheduled Tasks. Windows XP, you can easily avoid, the whole of switching and (the battery can use automated tasks) occurs when you have Batteries run. Here is how accessories set that up: Go to Start, All Programs, System Tools, Scheduled Tasks and then. Right-click on a scheduled task in the list (such as Norton AntiVirus) and click on Properties. Select the settings tab. Under Power Management, click on the following elected: "Do not start the task if the computer is running on batteries" and "Stop the task if battery mode begins. "Click OK to save your changes.

Adjust your display. You dimming your display can save battery power. Most notebooks now includes buttons for adjusting brightness and contrast.

Turn off or unplug non-essential Devices. PC Card modems, external USB devices and so on can even the idle current.

Shutdown, wireless networking when you need. A wireless network PC card or integrated chip set can also force withdrawal.

Do not play the music on your notebook. Listening is a music CD or digital music files on your laptop battery is one more to spare. Rather, a portable MP3 or CD player to pack in your hand luggage, better than its batteries drain your Notebooks.

Do not play DVDs, either. Watching a DVD movie is one of the largest battery-sucking activities. You could make a portable DVD player instead of pack, but they are expensive – some go for almost $ 1,000 – and it's still one more thing to pack.

Consider some purchases

Look in a notebook alternative PDAs running. Far more than the typical battery may notebook can about. So consider instead the packaging of your notebook a Pocket PC with a fixed line or wireless modem and an external keyboard equipped, for example. Sure, the PDA screen is much smaller than a notebook computer and PDA applications are rather limited. But you can continue typing has expired hours after your neighbor's ThinkPad.

Another option, the AlphaSmart Dana ($ 400), a Palm OS-based, full-sized keyboard with LCD, which can be operated for up to 25 hours with one battery charge. And when its battery is empty, you can pop three in AAA Batteries and keep going.

Get a notebook with long-life batteries. If you're in the market for a new notebook, sat a long time Battery life at the top of the list of features. Notebooks based on Intel's new Pentium M, especially the full implementation of the Centrino architecture (the Pentium M with Intel's 855 chipset and society 802.11b or Wi-Fi, Hardware), are among the best in terms of battery performance. For example, lasted Toshiba Tecra M1 Centrino-based 7 hours, 6 minutes – longer than all other notebooks we've tested. You can look for the latest Tecra prices (from about $ 2,000 shop) at the PCWorld.com Product Finder.

Replace Your notebook battery regularly. Months you should swap in a new battery about every 18th Most laptops today with lithium-ion batteries that do not have the Memory-loss problems in older notebook batteries. Nevertheless lose rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, their ability to hold a charge over time. Shop for the current prices on your notebook battery in our product finder by name in your notebook or model number (such as Dell Inspiron 6400 battery) into the search box.
