Digital Cameras

Does it matter what the amount of megapixels a digital camera?
I just want great photos. So I see 5 megapixels, 6, 7.2, 8th Does it matter who it is? You can tell the difference in photo quality 5 to 8 mp? What would you sugjest?
I know people hate the "it all depends" [...]
